William Henry Sparboe Jr.

d. August 6, 2010

William Henry Sparboe, Jr., 68, of Mount Carroll, Illinois, died Friday, August 6, 2010 at FHN Hospital, Freeport, Illinois.

Bill was born January 23, 1942 to William H. and Melva (Mercer) Sparboe of Corning, Iowa. He graduated from Mt. Carroll High School in 1960. Bill served his country in the United States Army 1966-1970 including a one year tour of duty in Viet Nam as an intelligence analyst.

Bill married Barbara Bauch October 7, 1967. He graduated from Shimer College in 1970 and earned a Master of Arts degree from The University of Illinois in 1975. Bill taught Social Studies at Mt. Carroll High School for over thirty years. His students gave him the nickname Sir and their respect meant a great deal to him.

Bill was honored to serve as Alderman on the Mt. Carroll City Council and as a trustee and past president of the Mt. Carroll Public Library. He was a member of the Jo Carroll LRA board and Mt. Carroll American Legion Post #67. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church and sang with the choir.

Bill enjoyed his family and many friends. He loved buying new books, reading old books, listening to military marches, watching trains, long walks in the countryside and learning something new.

Bill will be dearly remembered by his wife Barbara, his son William (Natalie) Sparboe of Longmont, Colorado and Benjamin (Megan) Sparboe and grandson, Isaac, of North Liberty, Iowa and his sister Cynthia (Dan) Burnett of Troy Ohio. Preceding him in death were his parents, and a step father, Howard Benham.

Funeral services will be held at Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church on Tuesday, August tenth at 2:00p.m. with Rev. Mark Harkness officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be at Frank Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll from 4:00 to 7:00p.m. on Monday, August ninth.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church or Mt. Carroll Public Library. Or just do something to make your town a better place to live. Treat all people with respect. See another point of view. Follow world events. Get in touch with a friend from the past. Believe that the glass is half full. Love your country. Be the best parent a kid could ever have. Hang a blue bird house on a forgotten fence post. Be a true friend. Better yet, be a great role model for a generation of young people. Bill would love that.
