William R. Scott, age 83, of Savanna, Illinois passed away Sunday, June 3, 2018 at his home. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 8, 2018 at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will take place in Savanna Township Cemetery, Savanna. William was born December 17, 1934 in Savanna, the son of William D. and Josephine (Frutchey) Scott. He attended Savanna High School, graduating with the Class of 1952. William proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1954-57, attaining the rank of Sergeant and serving in Korea and Japan. On October 16, 1954, he married Joan Blakeslee in Savanna.
William worked as a production planner for the Eaton Corporation for 28 years until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, trapping, hunting, and telling good jokes.
When it came to volunteering for the community, William never knew how to say no! Everyone knew that if you wanted something done right, you called Bill Scott. He was a member of many local organizations and committees. He served for 16 years in the Savanna City Council, the Savanna Hospital Board, Northwest Illinois Ducks Unlimited member for 28 years where he served on the State Advisory Board and as Chapter Chairman. He held many positions as a life member in the Savanna VFW including Commander, Service Officer, Honor Guard, Toys for Tots organizer and Emceed Memorial Day Services. He was also very active in the Friends of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge which he helped to establish in 1998, and served as Past President, Vice President, and on the Board of Directors.
William will be dearly missed by his wife of 63 years, Joan; one son, William Shawn (Joyce) Scott of McAlester, Oklahoma; one daughter, Kelly (Joe Eirhart) Scott of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin; one grandson, Matthew Scott; two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Dominic Scott; one brother, David (Ruth) Scott of Galesburg, Illinois; one brother-in-law, Ron Martin of East Moline, Illinois; and one sister-in-law, Donna Scott of West, Texas,and a special cousin, Sherrod McCall of Mill Valley, California.
William is preceded in death by his parents, William and Josephine; one brother, Ted Scott and a sister, Marcia Martin.
