William "Ted" Long

December 31, 1969 — June 27, 2013

William “Ted” Long, age 61 of Savanna, Illinois, died Thursday, June 27, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family. A funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church, Savanna, with Reverend Sejoon Jang officiating. Burial will be in Spring Lake Cemetery, Savanna, with military rites by the Savanna VFW Post #2223. A visitation will be held 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2013 prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be sent to the Carroll County Relay for Life in Ted’s memory.
Ted was born June 12, 1952, the son of David and Mildred (Dickman) Long in Savanna, Illinois. He attended Savanna Schools. He married Debbi Rogers on June 20, 1970 in Savanna.
Ted served his country in the United States Navy for two years and the United States Army for nineteen years, until being honorably discharged as a Sergeant First Class in August 31, 1993. While in the Army he worked as a Telecommunication Systems Supervisor. During his time in Army Ted was stationed in Vietnam, Oklahoma, Panama, Germany, California, Korea and Wisconsin. He was awarded six Army Commendation Medals. He also worked for Elkay Manufacturing Co., Savanna for eighteen years. He was a lifetime member of the Savanna VFW. Ted was a man of few words, but was able to make sense of things. He enjoyed camping, fishing, baseball, riding his Harley. Ted cherished his time with his family whether it was going on family trips or joking around and pulling pranks. He was a devoted grandfather.
Ted will be dearly missed by his wife, Debbie; one son, William Long of Clinton, Iowa; two daughters, Michelle (Scott) Brandt of Woodlawn, Tennessee, and Melissa (Fiancé Larry Twiggs) Long of Davenport, Iowa; four grandchildren; six brothers, Lee (Jane) Kehoe, of Savanna, Cliff Long of Clinton, Chris (Cheryl) Long of Savanna, Dale (Pat) Long of Baltimore, Maryland, Dean and Mark (Steve Romero close friend) Long of Tucson, Arizona; three sisters, Carol Stricklin of Savanna, Jackie Smith of Savanna, and Gale (Duane) Hall of South Carolina.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, David and Mildred.
