William “Bill” L. Fosdick of Savanna, Illinois, was a kind hearted man with a great sense of humor who loved visiting with children, especially his grandchildren. On Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at the age of 84, Bill went home to be with the Lord, with his loving family at his side. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 21, 2014 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Savanna with Reverend Daniel Foelske officiating. Burial will take place in Savanna Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church prior to the service. A memorial fund has been established in Bill’s memory.
Bill was born July 18, 1929, the son of Samuel and Elsie (Haring) Fosdick in Jackson, Mississippi. He attended Savanna High School and graduated with the Class of 1947. After graduation, Bill enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean War. Bill married the love of his life, Betty Martin, on November 29, 1953 in Lanark, Illinois.
Bill began working for the Milwaukee Railroad in 1949 as a locomotive engineer until his retirement in 1988. He was a lifelong member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Mississippi Flyway Club, Savanna VFW, and Korean Veterans Association of Freeport. Bill enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing. He also enjoyed training and spending time with his beloved yellow labrador retrievers, Mike and Mack. Most of all, he cherished the time that he spent with his family and many friends.
Bill will be dearly missed by his loving wife of sixty years, Betty; three daughters, Kathleen (Tim) Tyler of Plano, Illinois, Nancy Griffin of Chula Vista, California, Cindy (Bruce) Fraser of Sandwich, Illinois; six grandchildren, Sarah (Dan) Kuntzman, Ryan Tyler, Caitlin (Josh) Weston, Caroline Griffin, and Maggie and Molly Fraser; one great-grandson, Oliver William Weston; one brother, Bob (Pat) Fosdick of Savanna, and several nieces and nephews. Bill is preceded in death by a daughter in infancy, Barbara Ann.
