William B. H

December 31, 1969 — November 28, 2011

William "Bruce" Hoff Jr., 79, died on Nov. 28, 2011 from a cerebral aneurysm, beloved husband of Catherine "Katie" Hoff, nee McCue, for 57 years; father to William Bruce Hoff III (Sally), David Hoff (Nan), and Jenny Hoff; grandfather to William Bruce Hoff IV (fiancée Britt), Susan, Maggie, Dale, Kevin, Caroline, Elizabeth, Ben and Andy.
Bruce was born and raised in Parkersburg, West Bruce, graduated from West Virginia University in 1954 and Harvard Law School in 1957. From Harvard, Bruce came to Chicago to the firm of Mayer, Brown & Platt and became one of the city's leading trial lawyers. He was a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, serving as a Regent for four years. Showing a remarkable combination of talents, Bruce was an accomplished craftsman of scratch-built ship models, many built plank-on-frame, piece by piece in the way the actual ships were built. Three of his models are currently on display in the Smithsonian in Washington, Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry and the Wisconsin Maritime Museum at Manitowoc. His models have won several gold and silver medals at ship model contests. Bruce was a long-time director of the Nautical Research Guild and wrote extensively on nautical and modeling matters. He also enjoyed writing fiction, including short stories, plays and a novel.
On Bruce's death, his organ donation provided another family the gift of life. A remembrance celebration will be held Friday, Dec. 2 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Wilmette Golf Club, 3900 Fairway Dr., Wilmette, IL (North off Lake Ave. just west of I-94). In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, 75 Maritime Dr., Manitowoc, WI 54220 (wisconsinmaritime.org) or Camp Knutson, a camp for kids with special needs and severe health challenges, at 11169 Whitefish Ave., Crosslake, MN 56442 (campknutson.org).
