Wayne A. Daniels, age 82, of Miles, Iowa lived a wonderful life as a Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather. He positively impacted many youth in Miles and the surrounding area, as he was a co-founder of the Miles Little League Baseball Program and coached for many years. Wayne passed away at the Alverno Nursing Facility in Clinton, Iowa July 4, 2015. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 9, 2015 at the Miles Presbyterian Church with burial to follow in the Miles Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at the Church. A memorial has been established in his honor.
Wayne was born April 28, 1933 in Green Island, Iowa, the son of Howard and Pearl (Baker) Daniels. He attended the Green Island CountrySchool and is a 1951 graduate of the Miles High School. On November 29, 1952 in Preston, Wayne married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Yates. They raised seven children and celebrated sixty-two years of marriage.
Wayne was an outstanding pitcher,. In 1952 he was recruited by and signed a contract to pitch for the Chicago White Sox. Later he co-founded the Miles Little League Baseball Program and spent fifteen years coaching and mentoring many youth during a great run of successful seasons. He also enjoyed observing wildlife, especially in the Green Island bottoms where he grew up. He was a member of the Miles Presbyterian Church and a past member of the Miles City Council.
Wayne will be dearly missed by his wife, Shirley Daniels of Miles; six children, Lynn (Karen) Daniels of Miles, Laurie (Michael) Wildes of DeWitt, Rhonda (Keith) Fogel of Clinton, Gregory (Kim) Daniels of Berwick, Iowa, Lorin (Karen) Daniels of DeWitt and Beth (Dave) Varner of Clinton; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; and four brothers and one sister, Harlan (Joann) Daniels of DeWitt, Darrell Daniels of Clinton, Lary Daniels of Bellevue, Rita Powers of Clinton and Stanley (Judi) Daniels of Bellevue. Wayne is preceded in death by a son, Michael; a sister, Nancy Lou; and both parents. The family wishes to thank The Alverno for their care throughout Wayne’s stay.
