Wayne Allen Meyer, age 83, of Maquoketa, Iowa, formerly of Preston, died on Monday, October 13, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 20, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Preston, Iowa. Burial will take place in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Maquoketa. A visitation will be held from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday, October 19, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Preston, with a Scripture Wake service at 2:30 p.m., prior to the visitation at the church. A memorial fund has been established in Wayne’s memory.
Wayne was born on November 19, 1930, the son of Ambrose “Dewey” and Hilda (Peters) Meyer in Bellevue, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Miles High School. After graduation, Wayne worked on a farm as a farmhand, helping show cattle. Wayne enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country for two years. He married Dora Burken on December 28, 1963 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clinton, Iowa.
After Wayne and Dora were married, Wayne drove the local Standard Oil Truck route, delivering fuel to local customers. In March of 1965, Wayne and Dora purchased their farm north of Preston at Buckeye. They operated their farm for thirty-seven years, before moving to Maquoketa in 2002. After moving to Maquoketa, Wayne worked for Ag Vantage, Maquoketa. Wayne was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree. He was also a member of the Iowa Cattleman’s Association and the Preston American Legion. He loved farming and enjoyed staying connected with local farmers. In his younger years, Wayne was a 4-H Leader and helped his children show cattle for several years. Most of all, Wayne treasured his family and loved watching his grandchildren participate in sports and school events.
Wayne will be dearly missed by his wife, Dora of Maquoketa; one son, Todd (Michelle) Meyer of Preston; one daughter, Julie (Daryl) Ties of Maquoketa; four grandchildren, Dylan and Chayce Meyer and Keanyn and Afton Ties; and two sisters, Mary Ellen Greve of Clinton and Jeanette (Donald) Durkop of Elwood, Iowa.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Charles Meyer and one sister, Joann Clausen.
