Virgil (Red) A. Tyler, age 92, of Savanna, IL passed away peacefully at home on April 6, 2023. A funeral Mass will be held 11am Saturday, April 29, 2023 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Savanna. Visitation will be held 9 – 10:45am Saturday, April 29, 2023 at the Law Jones Funeral Home, Savanna.
He was born on June 16, 1930, the son of the late Virgil and Gladys Tyler. He married the love of his life, Norma Jean Bauer, on July 18, 1954, and together they raised one son, Tim. They were married for over 53 years until Norma Jean’s passing in 2007 .
Virgil was employed for many years and retired from the United States Post Office as a mail carrier in Savanna. He could recite the home addresses of countless Savanna residents even decades after his retirement.
Virgil was a veteran of the U. S. Navy. He belonged to many organizations including the VFW, American Legion, Loyal Order of the Moose, and the Elks Club. He was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church, the church choir, and the Knights of Columbus. He was a past member of the Savanna City Council. Virgil spent many years with the Boy Scouts of America, including twenty years as scoutmaster of Savanna Troop 45, assistant scoutmaster of Savanna Troop 44, and adviser of the Sea Explorers. Awards from the Boy Scouts include Eagle Scout, Scoutmaster’s Key, Silver Beaver, and the St. George Adult Catholic Award. In the Order of the Arrow, he held the vigil honor.
Virgil was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and traveling. In his younger years, he was a member of the Flying Silhouettes Water Ski Club. Virgil also loved to dance and was dancing multiple times a week up until just before his passing.
Virgil will be dearly missed by his son, Tim (Kathy) Tyler, his granddaughter Sarah (Dan) Kuntzman, his grandson Ryan (Aly) Tyler, several nieces and nephews, and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Norma Jean, his parents Virgil and Gladys Tyler, his sister, Alverda Boos, and his brothers Chuck Tyler, and Stan Tyler.
