Retired Army Master Sgt. Virgil Lee Curtis, 78, of Spring Lake, North Carolina, died Tuesday, October 18, 2011. A visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover. A graveside service with military rites will be held following the visitation in the Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover.
Virgil was born on June 6, 1933, the son of LaVerne and Berneta (Hancock) Curtis in Elizabeth, Illinois. He married Hannelore Hertrich on August 6, 1958 in Augsburg, Germany. Virgil proudly served his country in the United States Army for 29 years before retiring in 1981. While enlisted in the Army, Virgil served in Korea and Vietnam.
Virgil will be dearly missed by his mother, Berneta of Hanover; two sons, Anthony (Betty) Curtis of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Kelly (Cynthia) Curtis of Sharpsburg, Georgia; and one daughter, Sandra Curtis of Fayetteville, North Carolina; six grandchildren; Brandon Curtis, Ashley (Emmanuel) Stines, Christopher Curtis, Kyle Curtis, Seth Curtis and Grant Curtis; two great-grandchildren, Shia and Jonah Stines; and one sister, Kay Ryniewicz of Chicago, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hannelore; his father, LaVerne Curtis; brother, Leland Curtis; and sister, Violet Handel.
