Violet M. Handel

Violet Marie Handel, age 88 of Savanna, Illinois, died on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Big Meadows Nursing Home. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna with Reverend Nancy Wilkinson officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Savanna. A visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Monday, June 10, 2013 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. A memorial fund has been established.
Violet was born on October 10, 1924, the daughter of Chester and Viola (Hartman) Cramer in Savanna, Illinois. She attended Savanna High School and graduated with the Class of 1942. She married Edward Handel on March 10, 1944 in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Ed passed away October 19, 2007.
Violet was a homemaker who cherished taking care of her family. Before she was married, Violet managed Winkler’s Jewelry Store in Mt. Carroll for many years. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially bird watching and vegetable gardening. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and enjoyed making sock monkeys for her grandchildren.
Violet will be dearly missed by two sons, Edward (Elizabeth) Handel of Brownsville, Minnesota and William (Deb) Handel of Urbana, Illinois; three daughters, Vicki (Robert) Stretton of Savanna, Laurie (Glenn) Miller of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Kathy (Brad) Williams of Lansing, Iowa; six grandchildren, David Ketelsen, Tammy (Steven) Bowen, Timothy (Tami) Hunter, Patrick Thompson, Jennifer Bergner and Arwen Handel; nine great grandchildren, Kylie and Brenden Bowen, Austin, Shelbi and Keaton Hunter and Micayala, Ana, Ellie, Kristina Violet Thompson.
Violet was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; one sister, Harriet and a brother, Chester.
