Vernetta L. Near, age 87, of Savanna, Illinois, died Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Community United Church of Christ, Savanna, with Reverend Robert Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Savanna Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 20, prior to the service at the Church. Memorials may be given in Vernetta’s memory in lieu of flowers for the Savanna Historical Society, the Community United Church of Christ, or the Savanna United Methodist Church.
Vernetta was born June 29, 1922 in Marion, Iowa, the daughter of Lee R. and Cleora (Wieneke) Homedew. She is a 1939 graduate of the Savanna High School. She then attended Shimer College in Mt. Carroll and received a Bachelor degree in Education from Western Illinois University. On May 16, 1946, Vernetta married John E. Davidson. He died in 1965. She later married Harry Near in 1981.
Vernetta taught school for one year, then worked forty-four years for Savanna Building and Loan Bank. Vernetta was an accomplished pianist and organist. She was a charter member and sponsor of the Savanna Jr. Women’s Club. Vernetta enjoyed playing cards with friends, music, reading, photography and traveling all over the world, including Scotland, Spain, China and Russia..
Vernetta will be dearly missed by her daughter, Dawn Davidson Rogers of St. Petersburg, Florida; two grandchildren, Tasha and John; two sisters, Janis (Harold “Bud”) Wilt of Savanna and Adana (Don) Hilkemeier of San Antonio, Texas; and a brother, Jon (Janice) L’hommedieu of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and a sister in-law, Audrey L’Hommedieu Vernetta is preceded in death by both parents; both of her husbands; a brother, Norman L’Hommedieu.
