Mae was born March 21, 1928, the daughter of Emil and Esther (Linn) Shimic in Guide Rock, Nebraska. She attended Guide Rock schools, received her teaching certificate and went on to teach first through eighth grade in the Guide Rock School System. One of Mae’s students was her youngest sister, Shirley. Mae’s artistic abilities developed throughout school where she played the violin, wrote poetry, began drawing and experimenting with different painting styles.
In her desire to explore beyond the borders of Guide Rock, Nebraska, Mae traveled to Illinois to visit her older sister. There she met and married John Shippee from Lena, Illinois and had three children, Paula Sue, Larry Wayne and Wendy Lou. Baby Wendy lost her fight for life two days after birth. In 1953, the family relocated to Lanark, where Mae raised her children and continued to call Lanark her home for the next twenty-five years. While raising her children, Mae continued to show her artistic side in the form of occasional poems, short stories and drawings. Mae married Albert Champion in 1963, he passed away in 1971. Through the matchmaking efforts of a mutual friend, Mae met Donald W. Queckboerner on a blind date, they married on July 15, 1978. They spent the next ten years farming outside of Chadwick, retiring in 1988 and moving to Chadwick.

When all of her children were on their own, Mae dedicated more time to her love for painting. Mae developed into a highly respected artist throughout the local area and completed a large number of oil paintings, many of which were purchased by local area residents. Mae was a member of Lanark United Methodist Church. She loved and enjoyed life, family and her many friends.

Mae is survived by her daughter, Paula Shippee of Baltimore, Maryland; son, Larry (Avra) Shippee of LaGrange, Illinois; three stepsons, David (Linda) Queckboerner, Douglas Queckboerner, Steven (Holly) Queckboerner; one step-daughter, Sue Ellen (Larry) Boelkins, all of Chadwick; fourteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; four sisters, Alice Henry of Freeport, Illinois, Jean Shippee of McConnell, Illinois, Marie Hulsebusch of Branson, Missouri and Shirley Miller of Wildwood, California.
Mae was preceded in death by her husbands, Albert Champion and Donald Queckboerner; an infant daughter, Wendy Shippee and one sister, Elsie Shimic.
