Velma E. Guay, age 94 of Hanover, Illinois died, Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at the Elizabeth Nursing Home, Elizabeth. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hanover with Father Noel Jacob as Celebrant. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. A visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Monday, April 25, 2011 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover with a Rosary Service being held at 7:45 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Elizabeth Assisted Living or the Elizabeth Nursing Home in Velma’s memory.
Velma was born on September 14, 1916, the daughter of Clifford and Bessie (Craven) Whitney in Bismarck, North Dakota. She married Russell C. Guay on March 26, 1942 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Russell died on May 12, 1972 in Dubuque, Iowa.
Velma owned and operated Velma’s Clothes Closet in Hanover for twelve years. She was a longtime member of the St. John Evangelist Catholic Church, Hanover. Velma was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi, the Catholic Daughters of America and the St. Anne’s Society. Velma enjoyed cooking, reading, gardening and traveling. Most of all, Velma loved spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends.
Velma will be dearly missed by one son, Gary (Judi) Guay of Geneseo, Illinois; two grandchildren, Russell (Lara) Guay of Iowa City, Iowa and Jared Guay of Portage, Indiana; one granddaughter, Sabina (Scott) Overman of Geneseo; one great granddaughter, Destiny Overman; two special nieces, Pat Rochelt of La Crosse, Wisconsin and Janet Whitney of Irvine, California; five nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; one son, Greg Guay; one brother, Richard Whitney; and one sister, Virginia Krueger.
