Tillie M. Filipiak: A Life of Love, Laughter, and Compassion
Tillie M. Filipiak, age 93, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2024, in Galena, Illinois. She was born on June 14, 1931, in Thorp, Wisconsin, as Tillie Depa. Tillie was a beloved wife to Henry, a loving mother to Kathy (Joy), the late Jim (Pam), the late John (Sally), Mary Ann (the late Mike), and Gloria (Gary). She was a cherished grandmother to ten grandchildren and a great-grandmother to four. Tillie was also a dear aunt to many nieces and nephews and a wonderful friend to countless individuals.
Tillie’s life was marked by her boundless generosity, compassion, and a zest for life that inspired all who knew her. Growing up on a family farm in Thorp, Wisconsin, she often reminisced about her childhood, sharing stories of farm life and the close-knit community that shaped her early years. These stories became a treasure trove of memories that she loved to recount to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, ensuring that her rich heritage would be passed down through generations.
In her adult years, Tillie met and married the love of her life, Henry Filipiak. Together, they built a loving home filled with laughter, love, and the joy of raising five children. Tillie’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family. Always ready with a kind word or a helping hand.
She was actively involved in various charitable organizations. One of Tillie’s greatest joys was playing cards, especially pinochle. She loved the camaraderie and friendly competition that card games brought. Her home was always filled with laughter and love.
Later in life, Tillie discovered a passion for coloring. Her artwork was a testament to her patience, creativity, and love for beauty. Sunday afternoons were often spent listening to Polka music, a tradition that reminded her of her Polish heritage and brought a sense of nostalgia of happiness.
Most of all, Tillie loved spending time with family and friends, talking and listening to their stories. In her later years, Tillie made Elizabeth and Galena, Illinois, her final residence. Her warm and welcoming nature endeared her to everyone she met.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude’s, or Hospice of Dubuque, Tillie would also love you to carry on any random acts of kindness. An interment will take place at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 20th 2024, at Maryhill Cemetery, Niles, Illinois. A Celebration of Life will be held 12-4pm Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the Galena Territory Marina Pavilion, near Galena, IL.
