Thomas A. Veith, age 95, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died Saturday, January 10, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Society in Mt. Carroll. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Carroll, with Rev. Bob Ziebarth and Rev. Jim Green officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Mt. Carroll. Memorials may be directed to the Good Samaritan Society, Mt. Carroll, or to the First Baptist Church, Mt. Carroll.
Tom was born April 27, 1913, in Mt. Sterling, Illinois, the son of William B. and Effie P. (Clark) Veith. He graduated from Mt. Sterling High School in 1931. Tom was married Marjorie A. Tink, who preceded him in death in December of 1963. He later married Mary “Lolly” Wachtel DuBree on August 21, 1965.
During the 1930’s, Tom worked at the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Savanna Army Depot, before enlisting in the United States Army at age 29. Tom served his country in Europe under General George S. Patton during World War II. Upon returning home, he resumed work at the Savanna Army Depot, and later purchased the grocery store in Mt. Carroll. In 1959, he opened Veith Memorials in Mt. Carroll, and in 1968 he went to work for the Mt. Carroll Mutual Fire Insurance Company before retiring in 1970.
Tom enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, and any sort of outdoor work, especially taking care of his lawn.
Tom and Lolly spent their winters in Florida. Tom also liked to go camping in their motor home. Tom is survived by his wife Mary “Lolly” Veith of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; one son, Richard (Nancy) Veith of Mt. Carroll; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Clark) Baker of Zion, Illinois; two step – sons, Thomas (Carol) DuBree of Connecticut, and Douglas J. (Cindy) DuBree of Rock Island, Illinois; two step – daughters, Pru Haney of Davenport, Iowa, and Pamela Miller of Mt. Carroll; ten grandchildren, and numerous great – grandchildren.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Marjorie; one sister, Mary Margaret Adams; and one brother, Glen Veith.
