Thomas Irvin Smith passed from this life into eternity on September 29, 2009 at home with his family. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 2, 2009 St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Savanna. Burial will take place in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Mt. Carroll, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Savanna or Mercy Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
He was born May 2, 1930 in Savanna to Richard H. (Hal) and Florence (Good) Smith. Tom graduated from Savanna Township High School with the Class of 49er’s. He married Marlene Bolte November 1, 1951 at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Mt. Carroll.
For over 30 years, he worked as a Yard Clerk for the Milwaukee Railroad. Upon retirement, Tom built his own model railroad and amassed a large collection of toy trains. He added antique cars, trucks, and many other antique toys as his favorite pastime; however, his pride and joy was a 1951 Packard which took him to whatever destination he chose. He enjoyed going to the NARVE dinners and talking railroad with his friends.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene, daughters, Diane, Sheryl and Gwen, son, Gregg, seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Rick, his parents, and two brothers.
