Thomas “Tom” John Burmahl enjoyed living all seasons of life. He was an adoring Husband, loving Father, proud Grandfather and a caring Great-Grandpa. At the age of 78, Tom passed away on Monday, October 30, 2023 at home in the loving care of his family. A funeral service will be held 11am Friday, November 3, 2023 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston. Visitation will be held 5 – 7pm Thursday, November 2, 2023 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, and one hour prior to the service.
Tom was born March 11, 1945 in Maquoketa, the son of Ives and Mamie (Mullet) Burmahl. Throughout high school he enjoyed playing the trumpet and running cross-country track. He is a 1963 graduate of Preston High School. Soon after high school, Tom got right to living life, by getting a job at Dupont, getting married, and starting to have children. A little later in life, Tom found his true love, Dena Sue Smith. They were married February 14, 2007 in Clinton. Together they had a great partnership, sharing their life and dreams, keeping active and adventurous, and blending their families. They loved spending time together, and often went to Wisconsin to fish for Crappies.
Tom worked over 40 years at Dupont, and also found the time to win ice-fishing tournaments in Camanche, hunting deer, squirrels and pheasant, bike riding to Bellevue and back, golfing, running in The Bix, and even roller skating with his kids. He was competitive and enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston.
Tom will be dearly missed by his wife, Dena Sue of Preston; four children, Patty (Ron) Johnson of Gilman, Iowa, Mike (Amy) Burmahl of Camanche, Iowa, Marc Burmahl of Tacoma, Washington and Danny Burmahl of Muscatine, Iowa; two stepsons, Dane (Lauren) Johnson of Sperry, Iowa and David (Sarah) Johnson of Miles, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Sandra Smith of Preston; and his brother, Robert (Sue) Burmahl of East Moline, Illinois. Tom is preceded in death by a daughter Kimberly at birth; both parents; and his father-in-law, Don Smith.
