Terry A. James

November 5, 1945 — December 9, 2014

Terry A. James wrote his own rules; he enjoyed his family, friends and everything in-between. Terry could often be found telling a story, saying something politically incorrect, and enjoying a cold Natural Light. At the age of 69, Terry passed away at home after a long battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held 12:00 noon Saturday, December 13, 2014 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Savanna, with Reverend Dan Foelske officiating. Burial of ashes will take place with full military rites by the Savanna VFW. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Saturday, December 13, 2014 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Savanna, prior to the service. Memorials may be given in Terry's honor to the Church or the Great River Outreach.
Terry was born November 5, 1945 in Savanna, the son of Floyd Trealor and Florence Mae (Noble) James. He was the youngest of five boys, learning to be competitive and to excel at work. He is a graduate of the Savanna High School with the Class of 1963. Terry was drafted in 1966 and served in the US Army, Tec 5, during the Vietnam War. On April 20, 1968 Terry married Ruth Ann Grummitt.
Terry worked with his brother at the Lanark Body Shop for several years, then moved back to Savanna with Ruth Ann. They operated Terry's Tap on Fourth Street for three years and from 1975 - 1987, owned and operated Terry's Auto body in Savanna. He later worked at the Savanna Army Depot as a Guard until its’ closing, He then went to work for The Army Corp of Engineers at Lock and Dam 13 as an Operator. Terry was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church where he was a past council member.
"Harry" as certain friends knew him enjoyed bantering with friends, telling legendary stories about growing up in Carroll County and raising two girls. He had a quick wit and astute memory. Once in a while, someone could get Terry with a zinger, then it was on, he enjoyed a challenge. He liked to golf, boat on the Mississippi, NASCAR, could fix anything, was a great craftsman and, once again, enjoyed his Natural Light.
Terry is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ruth Ann of Savanna; two daughters, Jennifer (Bryan) Gallagher of Chicago and Theresa (Jason) Wicks of Morris, Illinois; three grandchildren, Jack, Kate and Eric; three brothers, Gerald "Jerry" (Patricia) James of Lanark, Illinois, Floyd "Jesse" (Linda) James of Savanna and Clifton "Cliff” (Rita) James of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. Terry is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Harold.
