Steven “Wahoo” Yenney, a lifelong Savanna resident known for his quick wit, big heart and unmistakable laugh, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2026 at home.
Steve was born November 2, 1946, in Savanna to Clarence and Gail (Schubert)Yenney, Steve lived a life defined by service, family and community.
Steve served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era 1965–1969, attaining the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. After his naval service he worked for Burlington Northern Railroad and later as a Fireman and Material Handler at the Savanna Army Depot until his retirement.
A devoted husband and father, Steve married his high‑school sweetheart Linda Hoertz on June 30, 1968. They raised three sons and celebrated 57 years of marriage.
He was a member of the Methodist Church, a member of the Carroll County Farm Bureau, an American Legion member Post 148 and a life member of the VFW Post 2223. In the past, he also served on the Carroll County radio patrol. He loved hunting especially deer season, fishing and classic cars — particularly his 1949 Ford.
Steve was a protector and a provider: a dad who was firm when needed but always showed up for his family. He delighted in his grandchildren and great‑grandchildren, supporting their activities, keeping their pictures close and taking pride in every milestone. Known for colorful sayings and a one‑of‑a‑kind sense of humor, he left countless memories that will be retold for years to come.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Troy, and his sister Dixie Green.
Steve is survived by his wife Linda of Savanna; his children and families including Travis, (Jennell) Yenney of Des Moines, Trent (Nicole) Yenney of Savanna; 5 grandchildren, Preston (Maggie Rannow) Yenney, Andrew (Grace Feldpausch) Yenney, Hailey (Andrew Castro) Yenney, Aspynn Montgomery and Addison Montgomery; and 2 great‑granddaughters, Ophelia Sage Yenney and Kayla Schulze.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.. at the Law Jones funeral home in Savanna. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Savanna. Military honors and a fire‑department tribute will be provided.
