Steve Wilkinson

September 8, 1958 — March 31, 2024

Steve Wilkinson, a man who embraced life's struggles with a resilient spirit and a heart full of kindness, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2024 in the care of his family and Genesis Hospice. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and compassion. His journey, marked by perseverance and joy, touched the lives of all who knew him.

Born on September 8, 1958, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Harry and Velma Wilkinson. He grew up learning a good work ethic from his parents. Steve graduated from Thomson High School in 1976, and his passion for craftsmanship led him to become a skilled Millwright with Local 2158, a path that eventually led him to Exelon Nuclear Plant in Cordova, where he worked as a welder in the mechanical maintenance department for many years.

In 1978, Steve married Melody Crane, and together they raised three children: Melinda, Justin, and Marissa. Despite facing life's challenges, including the tragic loss of his daughter Melinda in 1995, Steve's resilience and optimism stood strong. He did separate from Melody, and in 2007 married Tina Stanfel. His grandchildren, Adelle, Elise, and Owen, brought immense joy to his life, and his devotion to family remained unwavering. Steve is known for his smile, but it was never bigger than when he was playing with and teaching his grandchildren about life.

Steve had an adventurous spirit and love for family and community. He cherished moments spent in the Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park in Colorado, finding solace and joy in nature's beauty. Family gatherings, where everyone is considered family, were his delight, especially when he could cook in the smoker or over an open fire, creating awesome memories over shared meals and laughter.

His warm smile and welcoming nature endeared him to everyone he met. Whether he was riding his Harley, racing stock cars on dirt tracks in his younger years, or lending a helping hand to anyone in need, Steve's generosity knew no bounds. He was a pillar of the community, actively involved in the Thomson community and the Chadwick Lion's Club, contributing his talents to create Christmas decorations or lawn ornaments through metalwork.

Steve's passion for mechanics and tinkering with cars was evident throughout his life. From his early days working with John Krahn, to late in life owning Wilky’s Welding & WhatNot, Steve's expertise and craftsmanship were unmatched. He had a knack for fixing things, whether it was a car, an appliance, or a broken spirit.

He will be deeply missed by his son Justin (Katie) Wilkinson of Chadwick, his daughter Marissa Wilkinson of Thomson, his grandchildren Adelle, Elise, and Owen Wilkinson of Thomson, siblings, Vicky (Brian) Maze of Thomson, Becky (Sheldon) Geison of Chadwick, and Sheila (Gordie) Hawkins of Thomson, and close friends Mark (Monica) Updike, extended family, friends, and the community he held dear. Steve's legacy of kindness, resilience, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A celebration of Steve's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at Law Jones Funeral Home in Thomson, followed by burial at lower York Cemetery.
