Stella Marie Holland, age 79 of Hanover, Illinois died on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at the Elizabeth Nursing Home, Elizabeth. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 13, 2011 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. A visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 12, 2011 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover.
Stella was born on October 16, 1931, the daughter of Vincent and Margaret (Haas) Girot in Rice Township, Illinois. She attended Black School in rural Hanover. Stella married Herman Holland on November 18, 1948 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Herman died on November 5, 1994.
Stella and her husband, Herman operated a Dairy Farm in the Rodden area for twenty-eight years. She also worked as a waitress and cook in various local restaurants in the Elizabeth and Hanover area. Stella was a Stanley Home Products Representative for several years and in the mid 1970’s, Stella worked at Chestnut Mountain Lodge. Stella owned Stella’s Skid Row Arcade in Hanover in the early 1980’s and later worked for the Eaton Corporation in the 1990’s. Stella was a longtime member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover. She was also a member of the Hanover Ladies V.F.W. Auxiliary and was a twenty-four year Past President of the Sunday Morning Breakfast Club. Stella enjoyed quilting, gardening, Bingo, going to the Casino, hunting for morel mushrooms, cooking, baking and playing Euchre. Most of all, Stella loved spending time with her family and friends.
Stella will be dearly missed by her six children, Wayne Holland of Apple River, Illinois, Gary (Sam Poirer) of Hanover, Randy (Darcy) Holland of Hanover, Danny (Becky Deyo) of Hanover, Ranee (Jeff) Dauphin of Savanna and Brian Holland of Hanover; fourteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; two sisters in-law, Jamie Girot of Texas and Rose Girot of East Dubuque, Illinois and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Stella was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman; two sisters, Lois Miller and Luellen Klemme; two brothers, Joe and Ron Girot; one daughter in-law, Lorrie Holland and one grandson, Joe Holland.
