Stanley "Coach" Mccrudden

December 31, 1969 — July 22, 2013

Stan “Coach” McCrudden, age 80 of Thomson, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday May 22, 2013, at home surrounded by his family. Cremation rights have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Tipton Auction Service, 3001 IL Route 84, Thomson . A memorial scholarship for a graduating West Carroll senior will be established.
Stan was born October 11, 1932, the son of Peter McCrudden and Florence McCrudden (Lewandowski) in Rockford, Illinois. He graduated with the Class of 1951 from West High School, Rockford, where he was an all-conference running back. Stan married Marilyn Jean Kall on February 21, 1952 at the Broadway Methodist Church in Rockford, Illinois. He served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. In 1960, Stan earned his bachelors degree in physical education from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois
Stan started his teaching career in 1960 and continued teaching for thirty years. He taught for twenty-four of those years in Thomson, before retiring in 1990. Stan taught physical education and driver’s education courses. He enjoyed teaching but his true passion was coaching. Stan was well known as a coach, so much so that it became his nickname, most often answering to “Coach’. Stan had considerable success as a basketball coach and in 1972 had a team place 4th in the state class “A” tournament. He also did some refereeing. Stan was a lifetime member of the Savanna VFW Post# 2223, the Thomson American Legion and the National Education of Retired Teachers Association. Stan enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, playing cards, music and trips to visit his sister in Florida. Stan enjoyed the many countless hours spent with family and friends at "The Pond".
All these things would make any spouse or child proud, but to witness the impact he has had on students and people is beyond compare, he helped shape many futures. He had a presence that seemed to demand respect, even into his later years this presence emanated from him.
Stan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marilyn; two daughters, Sandy (Al) Dierckman, of Monroe, Wisconsin and Sherry (Terry) Fife of Clinton, Iowa; two sons, Stanley (Kris) McCrudden of Savanna and Sean P. McCrudden of Thomson; thirteen grandchildren, Mindy (Brad) Baumgartner of Wisconsin, Heath (Teresa) Wildman of Wisconsin, Kari (John) Sokol of Arizona, Carie (Mike) Wills of Iowa, Terry Fife Jr. of Iowa, Liz (Jerrad Strehle) Fife of Iowa, John Fife of Iowa, Phillip Cassiday of Iowa, Kia McCrudden of Illinois, Seth Bentley- Holst of Iowa, Kassandra Weltzin of Illinois, J.C. McCrudden of Illinois and Sami McCrudden of Illinois; and nine great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law Walter Kall. Coach will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Stan is preceded in death by both parents; two brothers, Peter and John McCrudden; a sister Kathryn Randall; a brother-in-law Ralph Kall and a son-in law, Mark Wildman.
