Stan was born January 8, 1946 in Rockford, IL, the son of Arthur and Verna (Steele) Holmbo. He graduated from Hanover High School, class of 1964. Stan proudly served in the United States Army with an honorable discharge. He went to work for Eaton Corp., then the Savanna Army Depot, where he retired after 20 years. In 1971, Stan married Marcia Ferrell in Hanover, IL.

Stan was proud to serve his community as a volunteer firefighter and the Commander of the Sabula American Legion. Stan and Marcia owned The HomePort for many years, where he was everyone’s favorite bartender and card player. In his free time, “Stan the Man” loved to be on the river, cruising Running Slough or fishing with a cold drink in his hand. He also enjoyed softball, pool leagues, and never missed a Cardinals, Bears or Illini game on the radio. As he settled into his retirement years, Stan would spend his mornings with coffee and a crossword, and his afternoons in the barn listening to old country music and reading a good paperback western. He spent years babysitting his grandchildren and never missed any of their events. He would light up anytime one of the grandchildren were around and always looked forward to family vacations. He liked to spend time in the yard wandering around with his little buddy, Foofer. Stan and Marcia enjoyed spending the winter months in Texas, with regular trips to Mexico.

Stan cared deeply for his family and his friends and will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife, Marcia; four children, Tina (Chuck) Fosdick, of Savanna, IL, Jeremy (Tammy) Holmbo, of Savanna, IL, Julien Holmbo, of Sabula, IA, and Joe (Rebekah) Holmbo, of Albany, IL; eight grandchildren, Ryan Holmbo, Tyler Fosdick, Brandon Holmbo, Tanner Holmbo, Austin Fosdick, Jayden Holmbo, Ella Holmbo, and Jack Holmbo; two brothers, James Holmbo and Roger “Whitey” Holmbo, both of Hanover, IL; several nieces and nephews as well as many extended family members. Stan is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Verna, mother-in-law, Shirley Ferrell, and brothers-in-law, Gary Law and LeRoy Curley.
