Sonja K. Gulley

Sonja K. Gulley, age 70, formerly of Lake Carroll, Illinois, died Thursday, May 28, 2015 at her son’s home in Apex, North Carolina. A funeral service will be held, 3:00 p.m., Friday, June 5, 2015, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to www.ovariancancer.org .

Sonja was born July 27, 1944, the daughter of Alfred and Evelyn (Rude) Kuykendall, in Twin Falls, Idaho, where she grew up on their family farm. She attended Jerome High School and graduated with the Class of 1962. Sonja married Richard Gulley on September 21, 1963, in Jerome, Idaho.

Sonja worked as a Dental Lab office manager for 10 years. Her favorite job though was being a mother to her three boys. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Lanark, Illinois, along with other Church and Bible study groups, the 4H Club, Meals on Wheels, and Republican Women.

Sonja’s favorite hobby was leading people to Christ and being a philanthropist who supported her local churches. She enjoyed spending time on the lake and at her home in Lake Carroll with her husband. She loved to craft and spent her spare time making items that were sold in the local stores and hospital gift shops. Sonja adored throwing parties and spending time with her friends. Most of all, she treasured watching her grandchildren grow up.

Sonja will be dearly missed by her husband of 51 years, Richard Gulley; three sons, Bob (Christine) Gulley of Apex, North Carolina, David (Denise) Gulley of Grayslake, Illinois, Don (Jennifer) Gulley of Vancouver, Washington; eight grandchildren; a brother, Laverne Kuykendall of Monument, Colorado; and two sisters, Janice (Fred) Wutzke of Corvallis, Oregon, and Rosalee (Jerry) Kullman of Prescott Valley, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Evelyn.
