Shirley G. "Plattenberger" Smith

Shirley G. "Plattenberger" Smith, age 74, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois died Monday, February 12, 2007 at her home. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, February 16, 2007 at the Frank-Law Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. Reverend Mark Harkness of the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Springlake Cemetery, Savanna, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Thursday, February 15, 2007 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Shirley’s name to the Mt. Carroll Volunteer Fire Department. Shirley was born in Hanover, Illinois on August 2, 1932, the daughter of Genoa and Lida (Wadleigh) Gamble. She attended the Knapp Country School near Hanover, and graduated from Hanover High School, Class of 1950. On December 25, 1951, Shirley married Philip Plattenberger; he passed away November of 1953. She later married Wilburn Smith, Jr. on June 13, 1969; he passed away on May 18, 1996. Shirley answered phones for Plattenberger Plumbing and Heating in Mt. Carroll for several years. She had also worked at the Savanna Army Depot during the Korean War; tended bar at the Savanna VFW; worked on the line at Eaton Corporation in Savanna; and ran a Taxi Service in Savanna with her husband, Wilburn. She is a past member of the Savanna VFW Auxiliary; and Tops. Shirley always enjoyed attending the Hanover High School Alumni Reunions and keeping in close contact with her classmates. Shirley will be dearly missed by her son, Dennis (Cheri) Plattenberger of Mt. Carroll; two step-sons, Mike Smith of Savanna and Willie Smith of Clinton, Iowa; four grandchildren, P.J. (Michelle) Plattenberger of Mt. Carroll, Ryan (Liz) Plattenberger of Jacksonville, Illinois, Trish (Dustin) Hayden of Thomson, Illinois and Bridget Plattenberger and Bobby Smith of Mt. Carroll; eight great grandchildren; and a sister, Audrey Cliff of Dubuque, Iowa.Shirley is preceded in death by both husbands, her parents, a sister, Maxine Hottenstein and a step-daughter, Connie.
