Shirley Holland

July 12, 1939 — September 3, 2016

Shirley A. Holland, age 77, of Elizabeth, Illinois, died with her girls by her side on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Iowa after a brief illness. A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00, September 6, 2016 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, Elizabeth. A second visitation held from 9:30-10:30, prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Elizabeth. A memorial fund has been established in Shirley’s memory.
Shirley was born on July 12, 1939, the daughter of Walter and Clara (Bower) Thompson in Nora, Illinois. She attended Warren High School and graduated with the Class of 1957. After graduation, Shirley worked at Economy Fire and Casualty Insurance in Freeport from 1957-1961. She married David Holland on November 12, 1960 in Stockton, Illinois. David died on August 1, 2004 in Elizabeth.
Shirley was a program assistant for the U.S.D.A. - Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service for thirty-one years, before retiring in 1996. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth. After retirement, Shirley continued to work part-time for local businesses. She also treasured traveling, visiting with her friends and playing cards. She loved being a hostess and opened her house to many. Most of all, Shirley loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Sharon (Jeff) Randecker of Elizabeth and Suzette (Dave) Schumacher of Chaska, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Justin (Kristen) Randecker and Ryan Randecker, all of Elizabeth; and Jeremy and Allison Schumacher of Chaska, Minnesota; one great granddaughter, Andi Randecker and one great grandson due to arrive in November; one sister, Marilyn (Gene) Robinson of Lena, Illinois; one brother, Paul (Janelle) Thompson of Blanchardville, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews which were all close to her heart.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, David.
