Shirley Elizabeth Ferrell, age 89, of Hanover, Illinois died Friday, August 13, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mount Carroll, Illinois. A visitation will be from 5 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Hanover. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover, followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. A special thank you to the entire staff at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mt. Carroll for the compassionate care that was bestowed upon Shirley.

Shirley was born April 10, 1921 in Hanover, Illinois, the daughter of Amos Francis and Bridget Eliza (Whalen) Jackson. Shirley was raised Catholic and strongly held onto her beliefs. She attended the Hanover Schools and as a young lady worked at the Hanover Woolen Mill. Once World War II began, she went to work at the Savanna Army Depot. While working there she met her future husband, Ray Ferrell. On September 15, 1950, Shirley and Ray were married in St. Louis, Missouri. This September, they would of celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Shirley then worked for many years at Eaton Corp. in Hanover, where she had an abundance of good times. Once retired, Shirley and Ray would travel to Mission, Texas to spend the winter months. This was her 53rd year of being a member of the Hanover VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Shirley's pride and joy was her family and she loved having everyone around her. She loved cooking for the family, gardening, music, dancing, and traveling.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 59 years, Ray, of Hanover; one son, Joe (Mag) Ferrell of Hanover; five daughters, Judy (Gary) Law of Savanna, Marcia (Stan) Holmbo of Sabula, Iowa, Kathy (Tom Rafferty) Teberg of Savanna, Jamie (Scott) Mills of Savanna, and Brenda “Bean” Ferrell of Hanover; 22 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; two nephews; Gary Nesbitt of Tucson, Arizona and Carl Nesbitt of West Valley, Utah; one sister-in-law, Roberta Kelly of Imboden, Arkansas and one brother-in-law, LeRoy Ferrell of Imboden, Arkansas.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Leroy Curley; her two sisters, Della Kirchner and Thelma Nesbitt; and her brother, William Jackson.
