Sherwood Henry Queckboerner, age 93, died Saturday, January 28, 2012, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna, IL. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at Chadwick Cemetery, Chadwick, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the graveside service on Wednesday at Law – Jones Funeral Home in Savanna, Illinois. A Memorial Fund will be set up at Mess Manor in Savanna, IL.
Sherwood was born April 6, 1918 in Fairhaven near Chadwick. He is the son of Fred and Hattie Queckboerner of Chadwick, IL. Sherwood married Marjorie Walker on February 9, 1968 and she passed away on May 15, 1984.
He attended Fairhaven Center School and then he worked on the farm after 1 year of High School. On March 21, 1941 he joined the U.S Army and was an Auto Mechanic in the Technician Fifth Grade 115th Medical Battalion. He worked on jeeps and ambulances and toured Camp Roberts California, Hawaiian Islands, Guada Canal, New Britain and the Philippine Islands. During his time he received an American Defense Service Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Battle Star, 6 Overseas Service Bars, 1 Service Stripe for Good Conduct. Sherwood was Honorable Discharged on October 11, 1945.
After his discharge at the age of 27 he hauled gravel for Carlson Trucking in Sterling and then worked on the Hartman farm by Morrison, IL. In 1945 he worked at Strohecher Implement store in Mt. Carroll. He then moved on and worked at Meyer & Litwiller store in Milledgeville and then he retired in 1983 at Meyer & Litwiller in Lanark. He was a mechanic that worked on John Deer farm machinery. Sherwood enjoyed reading mechanic magazines or books and was always interested in how technology has changed and was always current on how things have improved during his lifetime. During his retirement years he enjoyed the many drives around Carroll County and everyday he took his drive down the Mississippi River and enjoyed watching the barges and eagles. He also had a great interest and enjoyed watching the Cubs play baseball.
Sherwood lived in his home in Savanna, IL for 34 years until December 2011 when he moved to Pinnacle Place. His remaining days were at Big Meadows prior to living at Pinnacle Place for a month.
He was pre-deceased by his father Fred Queckboerner May 1984, his mother Hattie Queckboerner January 1991, his brother Jesse Queckboerner August 2006, his sister Jeanette Bittner March 1975 and his nephew Dennis Bittner October 1978.
He is survived by his niece Marna Foltz from Bothell, WA (Keith), Grand Nephews; Kermit Foltz from Bothell, WA and Eric Foltz from Canoga Park, CA and Grand Niece Jennifer Lane from Lynnwood, WA. Grand Niece DeAnne Bittner from Chicago, IL daughter of Dennis Bittner and Leslie Bittner-Oslansky (Paul), and other family members Henry and Virginia Winters of Freeport, Illinois, and Robert and Marge Traum of Milledgeville, Illinois. For many years he has enjoyed the company of his dear neighbors Julie and Ray Skiles, Kathy and Don Nichols, and Mrs. Hamilton.
