Ruby J. Kness, age 90, of Chadwick, Illinois, died Saturday, June 6, 2015, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 12, 2015 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Private family services will be held Saturday with burial in the Chadwick Cemetery.
Ruby, the daughter of Melvin and Louisa (Lippolt) Bowman, was born on July 19, 1924, in Mt. Carroll, Illinois, and attended Mt. Carroll High School. Ruby married Vernon Kness on November 9, 1940, in Tipton, Iowa. They spent 49 years together before Vernon’s death on November 6, 1990.
Besides taking care of family, Ruby was a nurse's aide at the Good Samaritan Society in Mt. Carroll for seven years. After retiring from Elkay as a lineworker after 14 years, Ruby worked night duty at the Caroline Mark Home for 17 years.
Ruby was a youthful 90 who loved nothing better than spending time with family and friends. Ruby liked to play card games, read, dine out, grow her shoe and coat collection from Bergner’s, and cook for her family. She made the best maldasha in the Midwest.
Ruby will be dearly missed by her eight children, Joan (Darwin) Paddock of Sabula, Iowa, Larry (Barb) Kness of Thomson, Illinois, Cynthia Fossett of Savanna, Debra (Gary) Fogle of Bettendorf, Iowa, Vernon “Bub” (Debra) Kness of Milledgeville, Illinois, Norma (Mike) Brown of Marion, Illinois, Dale Kness of Chadwick, Illinois, and Tyra (Gregg) Hemmer of Madison, Wisconsin; 15 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren, 13 step great-grandchildren, and 7 step great great-grandchildren.
