Ronald P. Smith, 88, passed away on June 27, 2023 at Allure Nursing Home in Mount Carroll, IL, surrounded by his family. Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. A visitation will be held Thursday, July 6, 2023 from 3-5 p.m. with a service to follow at Law Jones Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll. Burial will be held July 22, at 10 a.m., with full military rites, at the Upper York Cemetery in Argo Fay, IL.
Ronald was born at home on June 19, 1935 to Paul S. Smith and Neoma I. (Blair) Smith on a farm near Argo Fay. Ronald attended a one room grade school in Argo Fay and Graduated from York Community High School in Thomson, IL.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1977. During this time, he was stationed in Morocco, England, Guam, Thailand, Germany and 8 bases in the United States. Ronald married Janet A. Meader from Littleton, CO, in Newbury, England on the 15th of October, 1960. Jan died on September 14, 2014 after 54 years of marriage. She was the love of his life and his friend. After retiring from the United States Air Force, Ronald worked the next 22 years for International Paper in Clinton, IA.
He enjoyed travel, stamp collecting, gardening, collecting history books, and he was a volunteer at the thrift shop in Savanna, IL for 10 years. Ronald and Janet also enjoyed the time they spent doing genealogy of their families. Ronald attended York Baptist Church and compiled the history of the church.
Ronald is survived by his three children, Shawn (Sharon) Smith of Wheaton, IL, Renee (David) Adolph of Morrison, IL, and Rhonda (Bruce) Badtke of Mount Carroll, IL; eight grandchildren, Kelly (Jesse) Kiste, Nicholas Smith (Elizabeth Korn), Amy Smith, Justine (Matthew) Reinhart, Olivia (Ben) Rowan, Garrett (Nikki) Badtke, Rachel Badtke, and Anna Badtke (Marcus Fitzpatrick); great grandchildren, Analise Reinhart, Dietrich Reinhart, Genevieve Rowan, and Blair Badtke; brother, Gerald Smith; sister, Janice (Andrew) Houzenga; and sister-in-law, Judy Bowen.
Ronald was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brother-in-law, Martin Bowen, and sister-in-law, Gail Davis.
