Roger “Kiner” Giddings, age 76, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 31, 2015 in the comforts of home surrounded by loved ones after a long-fought battle with cancer. Family and friends who were touched by Kiner are invited to funeral services at 3:00 p.m., Friday, September 4, 2015 at Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 1:00-3:00 p.m., prior to the service at the Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula. Friends are invited to join the family for a time of fellowship at the Sabula V.F.W following the committal service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Sabula VFW Post 5234.
Kiner was born on March 21, 1939, in Sabula, Iowa to Irma and Robert Giddings. He graduated from Sabula High School in 1957 and enlisted in the United States Navy shortly after, serving on the USS Lexington. In 1960, Kiner wed Carolyn McElroy. Together they had two children, Jennifer and Jeffrey. Kiner was employed by DuPont in Clinton, Iowa for many years. He then went on to work as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. He also owned and operated Kiner’s Go-Devil Sales and Service for more than 25 years. After retirement he was self-employed in roofing and construction. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, serving as the Quarter Master for the last 11 years. He was also an enthusiastic member of the ‘56 Ford Antique Car Club and the Trappers Association. Kiner had a profound love for the outdoors and the landscape of the Mississippi bluffs. In his free time, his days were filled with trapping, hunting, fishing and rebuilding classic automobiles.
Kiner, beloved father of Jeff (Wanda) Giddings of Sabula and Jennifer (Harry) Spaulding of Davenport, Iowa; grandfather of Amber (Shannon) Hoy, Jeff Lackas, Chad (Sarah) Rentz, Corey (Becky) Rentz, Chip (Heather) Rentz; great grandfather of Taylor and Wyatt Hoy, Kennedy and Kaydence Lackas, Jacob, Dillan and Nathan Rentz; brother of Ronald Giddings, Richard (Sharon) Giddings and Barbara (Jim) Widder; and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Kiner is preceded in death by his mother Irma Giddings, father Robert Giddings, brother Bob Giddings, nephew Randy Giddings and sister-in-law Beverly Giddings.
