Roger D. Gerber, age 65, of Preston, Iowa, died Sunday, November 6, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, Iowa. Cremation rites will be accorded and a private family burial will be held at a later date.
Roger was born July 14, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Roger John and Katherine (Sawyer) Gerber. He attended school in Tipton and Clinton, Iowa, graduating from Clinton High School with the Class of 1965. Roger married Judy Pettit in June of 1965. He later married Connie Helmle on January 1, 2002.
Roger worked at the railroad as a welder, farmed for twenty - six years, and ran a resort in Hayward, Wisconsin, for eight years, before moving to Preston in 1999. He also drove truck for Larry Wulf, Naeve Inc., Eberhart Inc., and most recently for Bullock Inc., before retiring in 2010.
Roger was an avid fisherman and hunter. He especially enjoyed his and Connie’s trips to Canada. His biggest prize was a 10 ½ lbs., 31 ½ inch walleye.
Roger is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of ten years, Connie Gerber of Preston, Iowa; two sisters, Patti (Jan) Housenga of Camanche, Iowa, and Diane (Jim) Dierks of Clinton; one son, Lenny (Angela) Gerber of Miles, Iowa; one daughter, Michelle (Chuck) Empen of Preston; three stepchildren, Rick (Chris) Helmle of Bellevue, Iowa, Stacy (Stuart) Mohr of Bryant, Iowa, and Dan (Diana) Helmle of Wilton, Iowa; six grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, one step great granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews; and his very beloved dog and friend, Sheba.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents and one step grandson.
