Roberta Catherine Ottens, age 85, of Mount Carroll, Illinois, died Thursday, December 14, 2006, at her home. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 18, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Mount Carroll, a visitation will be held for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Reverend Mark Harkness will officiate. Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 17, 2006 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. Cremation rites will be accorded. Memorials may given to the United Methodist Church in Mount Carroll in Roberta’s memory.
Roberta was born on June 22, 1921, the daughter of William H. and Catherine E. (Schofield) Doornbush in Chicago, Illinois. She married Stanley L. Ottens on June 30, 1945 at the home of her parents in Elmhurst, Illinois.
She attended grade school in Elmhurst and graduated from York High School in 1939 and later attended Business College for 2 years. She worked as a Nurse’s Aid at Hines General Hospital and other Chicago area hospitals during World War II. Roberta worked as a secretary for the American Gear Company in South Chicago and later for Chicago Northwestern Railroad. In 1984 Roberta received the Secretary of the Year Award – River City Chapter. Roberta was employed by the Clinton Herald in Clinton, Iowa for 7 years. She then worked for Chemplex in Clinton as a Senior Secretary in the maintenance department for 22 years, retiring in 1988. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Mount Carroll, were she was active in the Esther Circle. She taught Sunday School and was the Church Treasurer for 11 years.
Roberta will be missed by her husband Stanley of 61 years; two sons, Jonathan (Kathy) Ottens of Montgomery, Alabama and Tech Sergeant Richard (Julie) Ottens of New Baltimore, Michigan; one grandson, Brian of New Baltimore; three granddaughters, Stephanie and Catherine of New Baltimore and Morgan (Michael) Perry of Fort Hood, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Andrew Raymond Allen and Olivia Faye Perry. Roberta will also be missed by a special friend, Cindy Liles of Savanna, Illinois.
Roberta was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Benjamin and William B. Doornbush.
