Roberta Ruth Becker, age 82, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois passed away Friday, September 23, 2005 at the FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport, Illinois. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll. Pastor Lisa Mapes of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church in Wacker, Illinois will officiate. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, September 26, 2005 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll.
Roberta was born October 25, 1922, the daughter of Robert Lovejoy Colehour and Ruth (Petty) Colehour in Mt. Carroll Township. She attended Mt. Carroll schools, graduating from Mt. Carroll High School, Class of 1940. On June 29, 1940 Roberta married Lloyd C. Becker at the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church in Wacker. Lloyd passed away on February 24, 2001.
Roberta worked as a payroll clerk at Eaton Corporation in Savanna, Illinois for fifteen years, retiring in 1980. She was a part-time Secretary at the Center Hill School in rural Mt. Carroll. She also worked on the family farm in rural Wacker.
Roberta was a member of the Preston Prairie Club, the United Methodist Women’s Club, the Writers Circle and the Golden Girls. For many years, Roberta taught Adult Sunday School Class at the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. She loved singing, writing poetry and had two books of Poetry published. Roberta gave many programs at Church and Social Clubs in the Mt. Carroll area. Many of her poems were used at different dedications and special events. She was also an accomplished pianist and wrote music…
Roberta loved and enjoyed her family and home life. She enjoyed traveling and playing cards. She especially loved her grandchildren; each baby was a blessing in her life. Roberta was very devoted to her husband and family. She had a great love for God, family, friends, church and Country- all were her priority in life.
Roberta will be dearly missed by her three daughters, Nancy (Richard) Veith of Mt. Carroll, Linda (Harold) Bielema of Albany, Illinois and Mary Jo (James) Frederick of Mt. Carroll; two sisters in-law, Julie Colehour of Ft. Worth Texas and Cordelia Becker of Dubuque, Iowa; nine grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren.
Roberta was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Lloyd; one great grandson and one brother.
