Bob was born February 13, 1936, in Chadwick, IL, the son of Harold and Arlene (Atherton) Tomman. He attended country schools in the Chadwick area, before going to work full time for various farmers in Carroll County. On March 31, 1956, Bob married Eleanor Roberts, at the Thomson United Methodist Church.
The young couple began having children and moved to Dixon, IL, where Bob worked for Rosebrook’s Coal and Oil, and also for Marsh Masonry. Bob was always a hard worker, and during many periods of his life, he worked two jobs.
A few years later, he and Eleanor moved their family to a farm between Dixon and Polo. Bob farmed full time, while also continuing work with Marsh Masonry. Bob finished out his working career, moving the family to a house north of Polo, and working various factory jobs, ultimately retiring from Johnson Controls.
Bob’s work ethic even followed him home, where he loved mowing and tending to his yard. Camping was always a favorite activity of his, and he and the family enjoyed many outings at the Thomson Causeway and White Pines State Park, respectively. Always a dog lover, Bob had numerous dogs over the years, including Poocho, Teddy, Rebel, and Polly; and had a cat who he simply referred to as “Stupid.”
Bob is survived by his five children, Robin (Bob) Miller, of Polo, Kevin (Catherine) Tomman, of Dixon, IL, Lori (Randy) Smith, of Dixon, Robert (Tammy) Tomman, Jr., of Milledgeville, and Amy (Jeremy) Fosdick, of Forrest, IL; six grandchildren, Bobbi Jo, Tracy, Kevin Jr., Nicholas, Travis, and Shannon; 12 great-grandchildren, Kaylyn, Blake, Kaylee, Kaeden, Olivia, Abigail, Payton, Faith, Cole, Mildred, Eleanor, and Winifred; and 1 great-great-grandson, Riley; three sisters, Beverly Shepard, Judy Wesphal, and Connie (Leland) Winch; and a sister-in-law, Arla Tomman. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Arlene; wife of 63 years, Eleanor; brothers, Harold “Bud” (Barb) Tomman and Ronald “Skip” Tomman; and brothers-in-law, Robert Shepard and Albert Wesphal.
