Robert L. Smith

Robert L. Smith, age 87, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died Friday, April 24, 2015, at Freeport Rehab and Health Facility, Freeport, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2015, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Inurnment will take place in Oakhill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. A memorial gathering will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association or the Carroll County Senior Center.
Robert was born January 22, 1928, in Cordova, Illinois, the son of John and Mary (Durbin) Smith. He married Harriet Russell on December 6, 1946 in Moline, Illinois. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before Harriet’s death on January 10, 2009.
Robert was a longtime farmer that retired in 1976. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and crafts. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.
Robert is survived and loving remembered by his five children, Richard (Mary) Smith of Shannon, Illinois, Robert B. Smith of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, Beverly (Jim) Wickland of Rockford, Illinois, Barbara (Gerald) Schubert of New Boston, Illinois, and Sharon (Tim) Spahr of Galeville, Wisconsin; 9 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Harriet; his parents; six brothers; two sisters; and a great-granddaughter, Kaylee.
