Robert L. Jess

March 1, 1940 — September 30, 2023

Robert Leroy Jess, of Sabula, passed away Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling, IL. That same day his wife, Mary Lou, succeeded him in death. Cremation Rites have been accorded for Robert and a private service will be held at a later date.

Robert was born March 1, 1940, son of John and Augusta (Ingwerson) Jess. He grew up in Sabula, and graduated from Sabula Schools in 1957. After high school Bob joined the United States Army, and served his country in the Vietnam War. Bob married Mary Lou Roling on October 8, 1988, at the Hauntown Trail Ride. He lived his life wanting his wife to be happy doing the things she enjoyed. This year they both had many health struggles and through it all he worried more about her than himself. He loved watching Iowa Hawkeye basketball and old westerns. Over the years his Sunday mornings were spent having coffee and visiting with his brothers at their homes.

Bob is survived by his three daughters, Laurie Fay of Clinton, IA, Lynn (Dustin) Stoll of Preston, and Beth (Matt) Dowdell of Kingsland, GA; three step-sons, Dwayne (Stacy) Wimpey of Miles, IA, Doug Wilkins Jr. of Miles, and David Wilkins of Sabula; several Grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Nelson of Sabula; and one sister-in-law Colleen (Earl) Burken of Clinton.

Bob is preceded in death by his son, Brian; one step-daughter, Shelia; his siblings, Arnold, Harold, Lois, and Vernan; and his parents, John and Augusta.
