Robert James Hartman, 90, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois passed away Sunday, August 28, 2016 at Carroll County Good Samaritan, Mt. Carroll. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 1, 2016 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mt. Carroll. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held from 10:00a.m. – 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to the church in Robert’s memory.
Robert was born on May 19, 1926, the son of William Floyd Hartman and Edna Marie (Schuchard) Hartman at home on the family farm in Mt. Carroll. He attended Mt. Carroll High School and graduated with the Class of 1944. After high school, Bob was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. After Bob was discharged from the Army, he attended Carthage College in Carthage, IL and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry. He married Helen (Stoneman) Schlenker in 1982 in Dubuque, IA. Helen died on June 14, 1990.
Bob was a chemist at General Electric in Morrison, IL for thirty-five years before retiring in 1990. He was baptized and was a member of First Ev. Lutheran Church, Mt. Carroll and was a former member of St. James Lutheran Church, Bettendorf, IA. He was also a member of the Mt. Carroll Legion, Post #67. Bob enjoyed gardening, traveling, baking, and was an avid reader.
Survivors include his brother, Lyle (Barbara) Hartman of Savanna; two nieces and a nephew, Susan (Mike) Herman of Pflugerville, TX, Bill Hartman of Waterloo, IA and Sharon (John) Hartmann of Lusaka, Zambia, Africa; one great-niece and two great-nephews, Caitlin Hartmann of Milwaukee, WI, Lt. Reese Hartmann, US Navy, Virginia Beach, VA, and Lt. Aaron Hartmann, US Air Force, Houston, TX. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Helen.
