Robert J. Hopkins

d. September 28, 2010

The world grew slightly smaller when Robert Joseph Hopkins passed away on September 28th, 2010. A memorial reception will be held at the Hanover Park District cafeteria (old Hanover school), on Saturday, October 2nd, starting at 3:00 p.m. and going until 7:00 o’clock or later, for all of Bob’s many friends and family to gather and celebrate their memories of him. A funeral mass will be held on Sunday, October 3rd at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hanover, IL at 4:00 p.m., at 103 Savanna Road, Hanover IL 61041. Everyone is welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that anyone wishing to make donations should do so to The Workshop in Galena serving persons with disabilities, at 706 West Street P.O. Box 6087, Galena IL 61036, (815) 777-2211.

“Big Bob” was born October 19, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of James and Genevieve (Whalen) Hopkins. He worked in a variety of professions over the years. In his early years he was employed by Midwest Forge in Cleveland, OH, and then by King Instruments assembling saxophones. After to moving to Hanover in 1971 he worked for Tri-State Tours and then later for Chestnut Mountain Resort as the Head of Inside Maintenance for 34 years before retiring in November, 2007. After retirement Bob needed something to do with himself and went to work for the Jo Daviess County Workshop in Galena, IL. He loved working with his clients and his “office” up at lookout tower in Elizabeth was the best! He also was a Captain with the Hanover Volunteer Fire Department for many years. Bob could fix about anything and loved helping anyone in need.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Genevieve and James Hopkins, and two siblings, Eulalia Coughlin, and James Hopkins, Jr. He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Marie Hopkins; three daughters, Colleen Ross (husband, Craig), Karen Griffin (partner, Chuck), and Kathleen Clayton (husband, Travis); two granddaughters, Liz and Madalynn Ross, and too many friends to count. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed more than words can say.
