Robert H. Hill, Clinton, IA, formerly of Thomson, IL, 91, died peacefully at The Alverno Nursing Home on April 30, 2016. Robert was born on October 1, 1924 to the late Walter Hill and Lenora (Jackson) Hill Paige Clarke in King and Queen County, Virginia. He attended King William County Training School and graduated from Virginia State University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry.
He married Rubye L. Robinson on July 9, 1949 in Ashland, VA. She died on October 12, 2015. They moved from Arlington, VA to Blackhawk Village (north of Savanna, IL) in 1954 when he was transferred from the Pentagon to the Savanna Army Depot. In 1957, they moved to Thomson, IL where they lived until moving to Clinton in 2012.
He retired from the Rock Island Arsenal in 1984 after spending over 30 years working for the Department of Defense. He was one of the founding members of the Savanna Ordnance Depot Credit Union (currently the R.I.A. Federal Credit Union); official scorekeeper for Thomson High School basketball teams for 35 years; member, treasurer, and Deacon of York Baptist Church; and member and treasurer of the Lions Club. In addition, he served on the Carroll County Zoning Board of Appeals, Hospice of Northwest Illinois, and as president of the Chicago Chapter of the Virginia State University Alumni Association.
He is survived by his children Michael (Linda) Hill, Marsha (Paul) Prah, Marvin (Shelly) Hill; four grandchildren, Michelle Hill, Nathan Klontz, Eric Prah, and Adam Hill and two great grandchildren, Isaac and Lucie Klontz. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two stepfathers, three brothers, two sisters, three half-brothers, and five half-sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at York Baptist Church, Thomson, Thursday, May 5, 2016 with Reverend Steve Newell officiating. Interment will follow in Lower York Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Thomson. Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association, 55 W. Wacker Drive, Suite 1150 Chicago, IL 60601 or the Thomson Veterans Memorial Fund in Robert's memory.
