Robert “Bob” C. Gray, age 89, of Thomson, Illinois died Thursday, March 28, 2013 at home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at the Law Jones Funeral Home, Thomson. A visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2013.
Bob was born September 24, 1923, the son of William and Zora (Palmer) Gray in North Canton, Ohio. He attended Lehman School, graduating with the Class of 1942. Bob enlisted in the Army in 1942, and honorably served in WWII as a combat medic during the invasion of Sicily, Salerno, and Northern Italy with II Corps under the command of General George Patton. Bob was decorated with a Bronze Star, Combat Medic Badge, and many campaign medals. He moved to Illinois in 1947, to attend Refrigeration School with his brother. Shortly thereafter on January 15, 1949, he married Evelyn Ashpole of Thomson, the youngest daughter of John and Minnie Ashpole.
Bob worked as a refrigeration and air conditioning service manager and field representative in the Chicago area for Amana. In 1967, Bob and Evelyn built a home in Thomson. He also drove truck for the FS Carroll Service Company in Lanark, and worked as a production manager for the Eaton Corporation. Bob was a member of the Thomson American Legion, which was named after his brother in law, Donald Ashpole and the Batavia Moose Club. Robert loved fishing and watching his favorite football team, the Cleveland Browns.
Bob will be dearly missed by his wife, Evelyn; four sons, Thomas (Lori) Gray of Pendleton, Oregon, Timothy (Pamela) Gray of Davenport, Iowa, John (Valerie) Gray of Buckeye, Arizona, Robert (Maria) Gray of Mill Creek, Washington; three daughters, Ann (James) Potter of South Elgin, Illinois, Judith (Craig) Wartinbee of Genoa, Illinois, Kathy Goudeau of Thomson; eighteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul (Lois) Gray of North Canton, Ohio, Dale (Joan) Gray of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and two sisters, Dolly (John) Lantz of North Canton, and Vervalee (Bob) Garra of Marriott, Indiana.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, William and Zora, one brother, William and two infant sisters.
