Ricky Daniel Phelps, age 52, of Lanark, peacefully went home to be with Jesus at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport on Saturday, April 30, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the Mt. Carroll Church of God with Reverend George Reser officiating. Burial will be in the Lanark Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll and also one hour prior to the service at the Church. A memorial fund has been established in Rick’s memory.
Rick was born December 25, 1958 in Decatur, Illinois, the son of Rev. Robert and Wauneta Fern (Atteberry) Phelps. He attended Stockton Schools from 5th to 12th grade, where he won the “Artist of the Year” award. As a youth he enjoyed playing baseball, football, basketball, track, climbing trees, and was in the band, Boy Scouts and 4-H Club. He received many outstanding state fair awards in 4-H, especially on art projects. He loved swimming in the Plum River, golfing with his dad, going on vacations with his family, riding bikes, and playing ball with his boys. Rick was a member of Berreman and Pleasant Valley Churches of God.
He worked at the Mt. Carroll School District, Custom Pak, Atwoods, Crop Production Services and several other places. He also enjoyed carpentry work. Rick accepted Christ as a teenager and recently rededicated his life to the Lord. He married Sophia Glass in 1998, and from their union received two lights of his life – his sons, KC – 11 and Shain – 9. He loved playing ball and going fishing with his boys. Rick also served in the United States Navy in San Fransisco, CA.
Rick will be greatly missed by his two sons, KC and Shain; his parents, Rev. Robert and Wauneta Phelps of Lanark; two brothers, Phil (Dawn) Phelps of Mt. Carroll and Steve (Kris) Phelps of Polo; and one sister, Pam Phelps of Lanark. He also leaves three nieces, Mindy, Melinda and Chelsea; two nephews, Derek and Sheldon; three great nieces, MacKenzie, Faith and Addison; and one great nephew, Kobe.
