Richard "Rick" Riggle

September 28, 1959 — June 11, 2024

Richard "Rick" Riggle had a huge heart and made a difference in this world. At the age of 64, Rick passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at home, in the loving care of his family and Mercy One Hospice. He was born September 28,1959 in Chicago, the son of James and Effie (Santee) Riggle.

Rick had a long career in law enforcement, proudly serving as a Police Officer for 27 years with the Village of West Dundee, making his way through the ranks from Patrol Officer to Lieutenant (second in command), before retiring in 2015. Every day at work he went out of his way to prove that cops are good guys. He was known among colleagues for his meticulous writing and dedication to fairness. He was a true believer in you are only as good as your word. While on the force Rick came across a stray dog who became his longtime companion, Brie.

Rick attended St. Vincent DePaul Seminary, Harper College and Northwestern University. He met his wife Laurie in 1985 when they worked together at Viking Graphics. Their relationship blossomed from friendship into love when Rick planted a tape cassette player in Laurie’s car with a note and a favorite song. They married July 9, 1988 in Crystal Lake. Rick’s most cherished part of life were his wife, daughters, and granddaughter.

In retirement, Rick and Laurie split their time between Arlington Heights and their farm near Savanna, a town where Rick enjoyed visiting family as a youth. His best days included feeding birds, turkey, deer and spotting rare birds such as eagles, wood ducks, pileated woodpeckers and sandhill cranes. He also enjoyed inundating his daughters with sunrise and sunset pictures.

He was a private man who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter, Bella. Rick was so proud of his family. While Rick lived a life with the comfort of rules, the famous quote in the family from Bella is “It’s easy to be good when there are no rules.”

Though he faced health challenges with cancer in recent years, Rick never lost his optimism and caring nature. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his honesty, fairness, kindred spirit, sense of humor, and commitment to others.

Rick will be dearly missed by his wife, Laurie; daughters, Lisa (Brian) Davis of Waukesha, WI and Lacy (Kieran) Ryan of Plainfield, IN; his adorable granddaughter, Bella; three brothers, Tom (his favorite) of Palatine, IL, Dan of Hyattsville, MD and Jim of Alexandria, VA; and two sisters, Diane Reeves of Galena, IL and Barb Riggle of Chicago, IL, as well as Laurie’s sister & brother-in-law, Karen & Jim Kruger, and Laurie’s brother Randy. Friends that are too numerous to mention! He is preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and John.

A celebration of Rick’s life will take place 2-5pm Sunday, July 14, 2024 at Metropolis Ballroom of Arlington Heights, 6 S. Vail Avenue, Arlington Heights, IL. Dedicated speeches will take place at 4 pm.
