Richard Lee Kehl

July 20, 1933 — April 2, 2025

Richard “Dick” L. Kehl, age 91, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Allure Nursing Home in Mt. Carroll. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 4, at First Baptist Church in Mt. Carroll. Visitation will take place at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Richard will be laid to rest at Hickory Grove Cemetery.

Born on July 20, 1933, to Howard and Florence (Slick) Kehl, Richard was the youngest of two sons. He grew up on the family farm just outside of Mt. Carroll, where he developed a strong work ethic tending to livestock and crops, a value that remained with him throughout his life.

Richard graduated from Mt. Carroll High School, where he met his high school sweetheart, Bette Keeffer. The two were married on July 26, 1953, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned 26 years. Shortly after their wedding, Richard was called to serve in the Korean War, proudly returning to build a life with Bette in their hometown. Together they raised two sons, and after Bette fell ill, Richard became her tireless advocate and caretaker.

A talented carpenter, Richard began his career working for Ted Robbe before joining the local union. Over the course of many years he built numerous homes and buildings in the area, retiring in 2000 after a long and fulfilling career. He had an innate ability to visualize and construct from magazines or photographs.

Richard was a pillar of the First Baptist Church community, where he served as Deacon and Moderator, sang in the choir, and was the faithful editor of the church newsletter. He was also a dedicated member of several organizations, including the Mt. Carroll American Legion, Township, Moose, VFW, and the Mounted Patrol.

Richard found great joy in hunting—particularly squirrel and turkey—and fishing on the Mississippi River and during cherished trips to Canada with friends. He passed on his love of nature and practical wisdom to his sons, famously advising, “I don’t care if you’re a ditch digger, be the best ditch digger there is.”

Above all, Richard was a devoted family man. He was a loving father to James (Laurie) Kehl of Massbach, IL, and Gerald Kehl of Mt. Carroll; a proud grandfather to Andrea, Justin, Cody, and Hannah; and a doting great-grandfather to six. He also leaves behind his nephew, Steve (Linda) Kehl of Mt. Carroll, and his niece, Peggy (Vernon) Johnson of Peoria, IL. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bette; his brother, Alvin; and his parents.

Richard will be remembered for his unwavering loyalty, quiet strength, and boundless love for his family and community. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity and craftsmanship that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
