Richard Charles Dickman, age 86, of Savanna, Illinois, died Thursday, February 11, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna, with Rev. Larry Thomson officiating. Burial will follow in St. John The Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Savanna. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 15, 2010 at the Funeral Home.
Richard was born October 6, 1923 in Savanna, the son of Otto and Golda (Ferris) Dickman. He attended Savanna Schools. On May 21, 1955, Richard married Rita R. Stayner in Stockton, Illinois. They enjoyed thirty-seven years of marriage. She passed away on April 12, 1992 in Rockford, Illinois.
Richard served in the United States Army during World War II. He then went to work for the Chicago/Milwaukee Railroad as a switchman for forty - three and a half years, retiring in 1982. Richard was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Savanna and the Savanna American Legion. He enjoyed gardening and having coffee with his friends in the morning.
Richard is survived by two daughters, Rhonda (Gregg) Flikkema of Lanark, Illinois, and Raelyn Dickman of Savanna; three sons, Stefen (Julie) Dickman of Lanark, Connan (Tina) Dickman of Lanark, and Christopher (Marcett) Dickman of Lanark; twelve grandchildren; and one sister, Geraldine Novock of Moline, Illinois.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rita; one grandson, Brandon DeSpain; two brothers, Russell Dickman and Earl Dickman in infancy; and two sisters, Mildred Long and Iona Kramer.
