David William Davies, Jr.

Reverend David William Davies, Jr., age 73, of Savanna, Illinois passed away peacefully at home in the care of his loving family, Monday, June 12, 2017. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 16, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church, Savanna. Visitation will be held 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Church. Memorials may be given in Dave’s memory for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) or Imagine No Malaria.
Dave was born February 20, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of David William, and Margaret (Williams) Davies, Sr.. He is a 1961 graduate of Austin High School in Chicago. Dave is a 1965 graduate of Northern Illinois University with a degree in Education, he later received his Master Degree in Physical Education. On December 17, 1966, Dave married Bonnie Forbes in Cicero, Illinois. They have raised three children and celebrated fifty years of marriage.
Dave taught school and coached in the Chicago area for twenty-three years, including Tinley Park and Cicero. He also coached football and girls track. Dave later entered the ministry for the United Methodist Church and served several Churches for twenty-six years. He would say, “I’ve always been a teacher, just switched subjects.” Dave served as Pastor for United Methodist Churches in Fenton, Fairhaven, Chadwick, Albany and Ottawa. Wherever he served he would get involved in the community, serving on volunteer fire departments, umpiring softball, participating in Lions Club, and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed reading, especially mysteries, following the Cubs, going to McDonald’s for breakfast, Poopy’s, Manny’s, walking in the pool at the “Y” in Clinton, and singing in the Church Choir. In 1979, Dave ran the Chicago Marathon.
Dave will be dearly missed by his wife, Bonnie of Savanna; three children, Owen Davies of Moline, Illinois, Margaret (Roger) Bussan of Lancaster, Wisconsin and Elyssa (James) Gooding of Mountain Home, Idaho; six precious grandchildren, Kate and Will Bussan, Elaina and David Gooding, and Parker and Chase Davies; and two brothers, Richard (Marilee) Davies of Vienna, Virginia and Reverend Douglas (Ruth) Davies of Sheridan, Indiana. Dave is preceded in death by both parents.
