Raymond Kuhl

Raymond August Kuhl was best known in the community as the local business owner of Kuhl’s General Store in Miles, Iowa. Raymond passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on December 10, 2014 in his home. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Preston, Iowa. Burial will take place in Miles Cemetery, with military rites accorded by the Miles American Legion Post #677. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Monday, December 15, 2014 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston. A memorial fund has been established in Ray's memory.
Ray was born May 28, 1917, the son of August and Meta (Huebner) Kuhl in Preston. On September 23, 1939, Ray married the love of his life Genevieve “Sally” Yates. Genevieve passed away October 14, 2006 after sixty-seven years of marriage. Ray proudly served his country during WWII on a high octane U.S Navy fuel carrier in the Battle of the South Pacific. After he was discharged, Ray was most notably the owner and operator of Yates and Kuhl General Store, before closing the store in Miles. Ray later worked for the Savanna Army Depot and retired from the Miles School District as a custodian.
Ray was the last living charter member of the American Legion Spencer-Cook Post #677 in Miles. He enjoyed dancing, fishing, following his kids in sports and music activities. Ray was very proud of his children and grandchildren and the fact that all seven of his children attended college. He treasured the time he spent with his family on vacations.
Ray will be dearly missed by his seven children, Philip (Barb) Kuhl of Morton, Illinois, Kathleen (Mike) Shannon of Clinton, Iowa, Mary (Lou) Tietjens of Clermont, Florida, Julie (Dennis) Streets of Maquoketa, Iowa, Janice Kuhl of Ankeny, Iowa, Diane (Dan Westover) Kuhl of Fort Collins, Colorado, Patrice (Marc) Kuhl-Ramsey of Fort Worth, Texas; fourteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; a sister in-law, Shirley (Wayne) Daniels of Miles; six nieces and nephews; and caregiver, Carol Nagel of Miles.
Ray is preceded in death by his wife of sixty-seven years; two grandsons; and one nephew.
