Ralph W. Eadie, age 85, of Hanover, died Friday, October 23, 2009 at the Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Iowa. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 29 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery with full Military Rites accorded by the Hanover VFW. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 28 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Ralph’s name.
Ralph was born May 28, 1924 in Hanover, the son of Ralph Harold and Dorothy (Limage) Eadie. While in his teens, Ralph worked at the Hanover Woolen Mill. He played basketball and graduated from the Hanover High School with the Class of 1943. Ralph enlisted in the US Navy on July 21, 1943. As a Radarman Third Class, Ralph served on a submarine escort ship based out of San Diego, Ca. In 1950, Ralph married Vera Atkins in Hanover.
Ralph owned Eadie’s Plumbing and Heating in Mt. Carroll for a few years and then joined and worked through Local 25 Plumbing and Pipefitters Union, Rock Island for many years.
Ralph was a 60-year member of the American Legion. He was a lifetime member of the Hanover VFW Post #5300. At the VFW, Ralph was instrumental in converting the old creamery building into the new VFW Club. Ralph has served on the VFW Color Guard Squad since 1946. Ralph was also a member of the Kavanaugh Masonic Lodge, Elizabeth. He enjoyed family time and was a great fan of the Fighting Illini and the Chicago Bulls.
Ralph will be dearly missed by his wife, Vera; two daughters, Colleen (Don) Edgerton of Hanover and Carolyn (Mike) Wingert of Kent, Illinois; a son, William Eadie of Hanover; eight grandchildren, David (Sara) Edgerton, John (Tammy) Edgerton, Robert (Cary) Edgerton, Andrew, Daniel and Aimee Edgerton, and Katie and Emma Wingert; five great grandchildren, Nolan, Connor, Ryan, Zoey and Alexander; a brother in-law, Hub Brantner of Riverview; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ralph is preceded in death by a son in infancy, John Edward; and two sisters, Wilma Calvert and Harriett Brantner.
