Phyllis Jean Young

Phyllis Jean Young, age 88 of Savanna, Illinois, died Sunday, May 17, 2015, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna. Cremation Rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. A memorial gathering will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Phyllis’s memory.
Phyllis was born on August 8, 1926 in Savanna, the daughter of George Oscar and Clarabelle (McWorthy) Smith. Following high school, Phyllis attended Business School in Colorado. After completing school, Phyllis worked as an Insurance Adjustor for a local insurance agent. On May 4, 1946, she married the love of her life Eugene “Dick” Young in Savanna. Dick passed away March 27, 1983 in Clinton, Iowa.
Phyllis worked as a waitress and as a sales clerk at many local businesses in Savanna and retired from Pamida in 1997. Phyllis was a member of the United Community Church of Christ in Savanna, were she taught Sunday School and was in charge of the Acolytes. She was a proud member of the Women of the Moose (Green Cap College of Regents) and the VFW where she held an officer position. Phyllis had a love for the outdoors. Most of all she treasured the time she spent with family especially her grandchildren.
Phyllis will be dearly missed by her son, Rickie (Christiania) Young of Chesapeake, Virginia; one daughter, Vickie (Jason) Thulen of Savanna; two grandchildren, Kristle (Derek) Cabell and Shane Kosier; one great grandson, Jasper Cabell; one sister, Betty Speck of Savanna; three nieces, Melody (Bob) Charneski of Savanna, Linda (Harry) Grissinger of Savanna, and Wendy Baldridge of Savanna and one nephew, Jack Baldridge of Dubuque, Iowa. Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dick and a daughter, Nancy Jean in infancy.
