Philomena G. Wanzek, age 58, of Preston, Iowa, died Saturday, September 4, 2010, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at the St. Joseph’s Sugar Creek Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph’s Sugar Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 6, at the Miller – Law – Jones Funeral Home in Preston. Memorials may be directed to St. Joseph’s Sugar Creek Catholic Church in Philomena’s memory.
Philomena was born April 13, 1952, in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Mildred (Boehmer) Wanzek. She attended Sugar Creek Schools and received her High School Diploma via correspondence courses. Philomena farmed with her family in the Preston area. She cleaned many homes in the Preston area and also worked in the janitorial department of Brad Deery Auto’s in Maquoketa, Iowa. Philomena loved her family and loved taking care of her many nieces and nephews. She also babysat for many other children in the Preston area. She was always there for everyone and was a great friend to many. Philomena was a member of St. Joseph’s Sugar Creek Catholic Church, the Sugar Creek Choir, Altar & Rosary, Preston Women’s Club, Jackson County Retired School Personnel, and Jackson County Farm Bureau. She loved the Sugar Creek Choir and enjoyed Christmas Caroling in Preston and local nursing homes with them.
Philomena is survived by five brothers, Joseph (Joan) Wanzek Jr. of Urbandale, Iowa, Eymard (Donna) Wanzek of Camanche, Iowa, Bernard (Verna) Wanzek of Clinton, Iowa, Gerard Wanzek of Preston, and Raymond (Becki) Wanzek of Maquoketa; two sisters, Mary Wimpey of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Jacinta (Steve) Clark of Wichita, Kansas; 10 neices and 14 nephews.
Philomena was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Francis Wanzek; one brother – in – law, Randall Wimpey; and one nephew, David Wanzek.
